Honoring each U.S. president in chronological order, the Presidential Dollar program introduced edge-lettered inscriptions carrying the date, mintmark, and IN GOD WE TRUST — an innovation that proved sometimes problematic. Four designs were released annually beginning in 2007, with the obverse featuring each president's portrait and the reverse depicting the Statue of Liberty. Early releases generated intense interest when manufacturing errors produced missing, doubled, or inverted edge lettering. The "Godless" Washington dollar, lacking IN GOD WE TRUST, became one of the most publicized modern error coins. Production for circulation ended in 2011 when existing dollar coin inventories proved sufficient; subsequent issues were made only for collectors. The program's requirement that only deceased presidents be honored (two years after death) means the series continues to grow. Each obverse portrait was designed by a different artist, creating a portrait gallery of American leadership in manganese brass clad across the full span of presidential history.
