Description
The 2020 (S) Reverse Proof Presidential Dollar - George H.W. Bush is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. With a mintage of 35,000, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 5 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features rotating portraits of each U.S. president in order of service, released four per year and the reverse displays the Statue of Liberty. The forty-first President (1989–1993), George H.W. Bush led an international coalition to victory in the Gulf War and presided over the peaceful end of the Cold War, including the fall of the Berlin Wall. He was the last Presidential Dollar subject, as the series requires presidents to be deceased. George H.W. Bush was honored posthumously following his death in 2018, the final Presidential Dollar. The coin was issued in limited quantities as a collector-only release. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Auction record: $800 PR70 02-18-2022 eBay. Struck in 77% copper, 12% zinc, 1% other over a pure copper core, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #890863.
