Authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, First Spouse gold coins honor presidential spouses with half-ounce strikes of .9999 fine gold carrying a $10 face value. Each obverse features a First Spouse portrait while the reverse illustrates her life and contributions. When a president was unmarried — as with Jefferson, Buchanan, or Jackson — the obverse depicts an allegorical Liberty figure rendered in the artistic style of that era. Released concurrently with corresponding Presidential Dollars, the coins were struck at West Point in proof and uncirculated finishes, with legislated mintage limits keeping many issues scarce. At 26.49 mm diameter and 15.55 grams, they provide a substantial canvas for detailed portrait and narrative reverse designs. Low ordering volumes for lesser-known First Spouses created secondary market premiums rewarding early purchasers. The series documents American social and political history through the women who shaped the presidency, combining gold bullion value with historical storytelling in a format unique among modern Mint programs.
