Description

The 2011 (S) Proof Presidential Dollar - Rutherford B. Hayes is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 2.0 million examples, making this the lowest mintage among 16 mint variants, representing only 1% of total production. The obverse features rotating portraits of each U.S. president in order of service, released four per year and the reverse displays the Statue of Liberty. The nineteenth President (1877–1881), Rutherford B. Hayes won one of the most disputed elections in American history, decided by a special electoral commission just days before inauguration. He is credited with bringing the first telephone to the White House. Andrew Johnson, Grant, Hayes, and Garfield were released — the final year Presidential Dollars were produced for general circulation. A government audit found over $1 billion in unwanted dollar coins stockpiled in Federal Reserve vaults. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $10. Struck in 77% copper, 12% zinc, 1% other over a pure copper core, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #505216.
