About This Series

Marking the centennial of the pivotal 1921 transition when the Morgan dollar concluded and the Peace dollar debuted, this program recreates both designs in .999 fine silver rather than the original .900 composition. The 2021 issues reproduced George T. Morgan's Liberty Head and heraldic eagle alongside Anthony de Francisci's Peace dollar with its radiant-crowned Liberty. The 2021 Morgan dollars were struck at Philadelphia, Denver (D) and San Francisco (S); Philadelphia also struck coins with Carson City (CC) and New Orleans (O) privy marks, since those mints no longer operate. Each coin weighs 26.73 grams, as the originals did, measures 38.1 mm and holds about 0.86 troy ounce of silver. After a pause in 2022 the program returned in 2023 with uncirculated, proof and reverse proof coins of both designs, and added new finishes in 2026.

About the Program

In 1921 the Mint struck the last Morgan dollars and, in December, the first Peace dollars. A century later, Public Law 116-286, the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, signed on January 5, 2021, told the Treasury to strike both designs again. The law set the weight at 26.73 grams, the diameter at 1.5 inches, the silver at no less than 90% and a reeded edge, and asked for renditions of the original designs with the year of issue. It made the coins numismatic items, priced at face value plus the Mint's costs, with no surcharge and no end date.

The Mint chose .999 fine silver at the original weight and rebuilt the designs by scanning old coins, hubs, plaster models and galvanos, then joining the best parts digitally, according to CoinNews.

There are no 2022 coins. On March 14, 2022 the Mint said it would skip the year because the pandemic had cut the supply of silver blanks, and the coins came back in 2023. The Mint now describes the Morgan and Peace dollars as an annual product. For the original coins, see the Morgan dollar and Peace dollar guides.

The Designs

Both designs are the originals with a new date. George T. Morgan's Liberty wears a cap trimmed with wheat and cotton, ringed by 13 stars, and his eagle holds arrows and an olive branch inside a wreath. Anthony de Francisci's Liberty wears a radiant crown, and his eagle rests on a rock with an olive branch above the word PEACE.

2021

The first year marked the mints that struck the original Morgans. Philadelphia struck three versions of the 2021 Morgan: one with no mint mark, one with a CC privy mark for Carson City and one with an O privy mark for New Orleans. Denver and San Francisco struck coins with D and S mint marks. The 2021 Peace dollar came only from Philadelphia, with no mint mark, as the 1921 Peace dollars had none.

All six were uncirculated, sold at $85, and limited to 175,000 of each Morgan and 200,000 Peace dollars. The CC and O coins went on sale May 24, 2021; after the website failed under that day's traffic, the D and S coins followed on August 3 and the Philadelphia Morgan and the Peace dollar on August 10. The Mint's figures after sales closed, as CoinNews printed them in January 2023, put each version a little under its limit: 174,498 Philadelphia, 173,782 CC privy, 173,531 O privy, 174,661 Denver and 174,850 San Francisco Morgan dollars, and 199,543 Peace dollars.

2023 to 2025

From 2023 each design came in three finishes: an uncirculated coin from Philadelphia with no mint mark, a proof from San Francisco, and a reverse proof, with frosted fields and mirrored devices, from San Francisco, sold only in a two-coin Morgan and Peace set. The Mint's sales through October 12, 2026, as CoinNews reports them, are:

YearUncirculated (Morgan / Peace)Proof (Morgan / Peace)Reverse proof sets
2023260,527 / 260,450366,843 / 330,652247,820
2024168,360 / 158,979178,827 / 159,702160,800
2025113,725 / 106,484147,243 / 129,931122,887

Single coins only; the Mint also sold the uncirculated and proof coins in bulk lots of 40, a few hundred lots each. With the 330 and 338 bulk lots, the 2023 uncirculated coins come to 273,727 Morgan and 273,970 Peace dollars, and those figures have not moved since mid-2025. The 2023 proofs and the 2024 and 2025 products were still selling in October 2026, so those figures are not final.

2026

For the 250th anniversary of independence, every 2026 coin carries the dual date 1776 ~ 2026 and a Liberty Bell privy mark with the number 250. The year has no standard uncirculated or proof coin:

  • Reverse proofs, sold singly for the first time, from July 9, 2026: struck at Philadelphia with a P mint mark, limit 250,000 of each. Sales stood at 165,196 Morgan and 149,466 Peace dollars on October 12.
  • Enhanced uncirculated, from August 25, 2026: struck at West Point with no mint mark, with polished and laser-frosted areas. Sales were 102,402 Morgan and 94,934 Peace dollars on October 12.
  • Diamond Field set, a Morgan and Peace pair from Philadelphia with P mint marks, whose fields carry a repeating diamond pattern cut into the dies with a laser. It goes on sale November 12, 2026. CoinNews gave its limit as 160,000 sets in September; the Mint's own page showed 262,500 in October.

Mintages

1921 Silver Dollar Anniversary Coins (2021 to Date) mintages by design and finish, taken from each coin's page in our catalog. Each figure opens that coin's page, which lists its varieties and errors. A dash means no figure was recorded. Where one issue was struck in more than one type, each type is listed.

How to Tell Them Apart

Date. Modern coins read 2021 or later; the 1921 coins they honor are covered in the Morgan and Peace guides.

Mint marks. On the Morgan the mark sits on the reverse below the wreath, and on the Peace dollar on the reverse near the eagle's tail.

YearUncirculatedProofReverse proofOther
2021none (Philadelphia), CC or O privy (Philadelphia), D, S; Peace none———
2023-2025none (Philadelphia)SS—
2026——Penhanced uncirculated: none (West Point); Diamond Field: P

Privy marks. The 2021 CC and O are not mint marks. They are small raised ovals with the letters incused, placed where a mint mark would go, and the coins came from Philadelphia. The 2026 Liberty Bell 250 privy appears on every 2026 coin.

Finish. A proof has mirrored fields and frosted design; a reverse proof the opposite. The 2026 enhanced uncirculated coins mix polished and frosted areas, and the Diamond Field coins have a faceted pattern across the open fields.

Errors and Varieties

The modern dollars are recent, and their die varieties and errors are still being reported. The privy-mark coins of 2021 are separate issues, not varieties, and a 2023 to 2025 uncirculated coin without a mint mark is normal, not a missing-mint-mark error.

FAQ

Are the 2021 CC and O Morgan dollars from Carson City and New Orleans?

No. Both mints closed long ago, and all three Philadelphia versions of the 2021 Morgan were struck in Philadelphia. The CC and O are privy marks, small raised ovals with the old letters incused on them, placed on the reverse where a mint mark would go. Only the D and S coins carry true mint marks; the plain Philadelphia Morgan and the 2021 Peace dollar have none.

Why is there no 2022 Morgan dollar?

On March 14, 2022 the Mint announced it would skip 2022, saying the pandemic had cut the supply of silver blanks from its suppliers. The program returned in 2023 with uncirculated, proof and reverse proof coins.

How much silver is in a modern Morgan or Peace dollar?

Each weighs 26.73 grams, the weight Congress set, and is struck in .999 fine silver. The Mint lists 0.858 troy ounce of silver for the 2021 coins and 0.859 ounce from 2023 on. A 1921 Morgan or Peace dollar of the same weight is 90% silver, about 0.7734 ounce.

Do the 2023 to 2025 uncirculated dollars have a P mint mark?

No. They were struck at Philadelphia, and the Mint's sales reports call them 2023-P, 2024-P and 2025-P, but the coins themselves carry no mint mark, like the Philadelphia coins of 1921. Proofs and reverse proofs of those years have an S. In 2026 the reverse proofs and the Diamond Field set carry a P, and the West Point enhanced uncirculated coins carry no mark.

Is the modern Morgan dollar a commemorative?

Not in the usual sense. Public Law 116-286 orders the coins in recognition of the 1921 change from the Morgan to the Peace dollar, but it adds no surcharge for a beneficiary, sets no end date and puts no cap on mintage. The coins are sold at face value plus the Mint's costs, and the Mint now issues them every year.
