Description
The 2008 (D) Satin Finish Presidential Dollar - James Monroe, Position A is a special strike dollar struck at the Denver Mint, part of the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 745,464 examples, making this the lowest mintage among 44 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features rotating portraits of each U.S. president in order of service, released four per year and the reverse displays the Statue of Liberty. The fifth President (1817β1825), James Monroe presided over the "Era of Good Feelings," a period of national unity and economic growth following the War of 1812. He is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, which declared the Western Hemisphere closed to further European colonization. The second year honored Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Jackson, and Van Buren. Mounting complaints about edge lettering legibility led Congress to move "In God We Trust" to the obverse starting in 2009. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Auction record: $200 SP69 03-31-2010 eBay. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #394659.
