Description

The 2013 (S) Proof Presidential Dollar - William McKinley is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.5 million examples, making this the lowest mintage among 20 mint variants, representing only 2% of total production. The obverse features rotating portraits of each U.S. president in order of service, released four per year and the reverse displays the Statue of Liberty. The twenty-fifth President (1897–1901), William McKinley led the nation to victory in the Spanish-American War of 1898, establishing the United States as a world power. He was assassinated in 1901 at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson were honored in collector-only format. The Roosevelt dollar is popular with collectors due to his role in modernizing American coin design. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $9. Struck in 77% copper, 12% zinc, 1% other over a pure copper core, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #517339.
