A dollar from the Denver Mint, the 2013 (D) Presidential Dollar - William Howard Taft, Position A belongs to the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.4 million examples, making this the lowest mintage among 16 mint variants, representing only 5% of total production. The obverse features rotating portraits of each U.S. president in order of service, released four per year and the reverse displays the Statue of Liberty. The twenty-seventh President (1909–1913), William Howard Taft is the only person in American history to serve as both President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. His presidency saw the ratification of the 16th Amendment establishing the federal income tax. McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson were honored in collector-only format. The Roosevelt dollar is popular with collectors due to his role in modernizing American coin design. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906.
