Description
2007-P WUFO-001 is an unclassified die variety from Wexler's UFO file, on the 2007 George Washington Presidential dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler calls it the "Elongated Third Ray": on Miss Liberty's tiara, the third ray, counting clockwise (CW), reaches far enough to touch her right arm. On the normal reverse that ray is much shorter, leaving a clear gap between its tip and the arm. Wexler notes no significant die markers on either side. Roger Beckner submitted the variety. Its Cherrypickers number is FS-C1-2007P-GW-901, and CONECA lists it as RDV-001. The Wexler entry's comments note a suggestion that the extra length comes from a die gouge, but say close examination of the lengthened ray shows no gouging, and the writer strongly disagrees with that theory. Whether the design was deliberately altered, the comments add, will probably never be settled.

Close examination of the elongated third ray does not show any gouging to extend the ray. I would have to strongly disagree with the die gouge theory. Was it a deliberate manipulation of the design? We probably will never know, but it certainly is an interesting variety. The above photo shows the "Elongated Third Ray".
