The 2008 (D) Presidential Dollar - James Monroe, Position A is a dollar minted at the Denver Mint, within the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. The U.S. Mint struck 60.2 million 2008 (D) James Monroe dollars in all, Position A and Position B edges together; how the total divides between the two is not recorded. The obverse features rotating portraits of each U.S. president in order of service, released four per year and the reverse displays the Statue of Liberty. The fifth President (1817–1825), James Monroe presided over the "Era of Good Feelings," a period of national unity and economic growth following the War of 1812. He is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, which declared the Western Hemisphere closed to further European colonization. The second year honored Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Jackson, and Van Buren. Mounting complaints about edge lettering legibility led Congress to move "In God We Trust" to the obverse starting in 2009. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #394655.
