Widely acclaimed as the most beautiful coin ever produced by the United States Mint, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle emerged from President Theodore Roosevelt's friendship with sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and their shared conviction that American coinage should rival ancient Greek artistry. The obverse depicts a full-length Liberty striding forward with torch and olive branch against a radiant sunrise, while the reverse features a majestic eagle in flight. The original 1907 ultra high relief proved impractical for mass production, leading to a flattened version for regular coinage. The 1933 double eagle became one of the world's most valuable coins when the sole legally held example sold for $18.9 million in 2021 — struck just before Executive Order 6102 outlawed private gold ownership. The series includes the MCMVII Roman-numeral high relief and the rare 1927-D. Struck in .900 fine gold at 33.436 grams, each coin contains nearly one ounce of pure gold. Saint-Gaudens' vision transformed American coinage from mere money into enduring art.
