Description
Part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series, the 1931 (D) St. Gaudens Double Eagle is a Gold Double Eagle from the Denver Mint. The Denver Mint struck 106,500 double eagles dated 1931. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her, and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Struck during the Great Depression, when mintages dropped sharply and the United States abandoned the gold standard in 1933. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.44 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9193.
