Description
The 1908 (S) St. Gaudens Double Eagle, struck at the San Francisco Mint, is part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 collection. With a mintage of 22,000, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 5 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Coins exist both "No Motto" and "With Motto" (IN GOD WE TRUST), creating a major type distinction after Congress mandated the motto's restoration. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $6.5K to $27K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9149.
