Indian Head Quarter Eagles 1908-1929

About This Series

Bela Lyon Pratt's innovative incuse (sunken relief) design, created at President Theodore Roosevelt's initiative to beautify American coinage. The recessed design was controversial — critics argued the crevices would harbor germs. Despite low mintages for some dates, the series was produced for 22 years. The 1911-D, with 55,680 struck, is the key date.
