Description
The 1920 (S) St. Gaudens Double Eagle is a Gold Double Eagle produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 558,000, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 71% of production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. The 1920-S is a major rarity with most of the mintage melted. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $21K to $108K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge.
