Description
The 1923 (D) St. Gaudens Double Eagle was struck at the Denver Mint as a Gold Double Eagle in the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 1.7 million, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 75% of production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Minted during and after World War I, as America emerged as a global power and experienced the prosperity of the Roaring Twenties. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $4.9K to $5.0K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge.
