Description

Judd-1778b is the plain edge variant of the J-1778 double eagle pattern, struck without any edge lettering whatsoever. Where other 1907 Saint-Gaudens patterns bear E PLURIBUS UNUM on the edge in various typefaces and configurations, this version presents completely smooth, unlettered edges. The plain edge treatment was tested as a simpler production alternative that would eliminate the separate edge-lettering step in the striking process, or it may represent a trial striking made before the edge collar was installed. The "b" suffix indicates the second composition or format variant after J-1778a. The obverse carries Saint-Gaudens' iconic striding Liberty design, and the reverse shows the eagle in flight above a radiant sun. Plain edge double eagles are historically significant because the original 1907 high relief production coins were struck with edge lettering, making this unlettered pattern a road not taken in the final design specification. The absence of edge lettering gives the coin a noticeably different hand feel and visual profile compared to its lettered-edge counterparts, and it raises questions about whether the Mint seriously considered omitting the edge motto from the production version.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8 (Extremely Rare). Plain edge variants are among the scarcer configurations in the 1907 double eagle pattern series.
