Description
This is the 1909/8 overdate on the Saint-Gaudens double eagle. The design is by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, engaged at President Theodore Roosevelt's request. Error-Ref notes that overdates made by punching one date over another ceased to be possible after 1908, so a 1909 overdate comes from hubbing: the die took impressions from hubs carrying two different dates, leaving traces of the 8 beneath the 9. Wexler lists it as 1909 $20 WOVD-001 (WOVD designating a Wexler Overdate) and cross-references it as Breen 7373. Wexler notes no die markers on either side.
