About This Series

Bela Lyon Pratt's incuse (sunken relief) design, matching the quarter eagle. The innovative recessed design created a flat field surface that proved more resistant to wear than traditional raised designs. The 1909-O is a one-year-only New Orleans mint issue and the series' key date. These coins remained in production until gold coinage ceased in 1929.
