Description

The 1907 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1778/1909, E*PLURIBUS*UNUM*********** Obv Up is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Design Reform Patterns (1880-1942) series. It is the Ultra High Relief whose E*PLURIBUS*UNUM*********** edge reads with the obverse up, the so-called inverted edge. Each coin took seven blows of the press, with the lettered collar used only for the last, so how that collar was set decided which way the edge reads. USPatterns.com confirms five and suspects they were struck first, as the coins with the 1906 edge also read obverse up. Pollock numbers this orientation separately (Pollock-2003) and NGC and PCGS grade it separately, while Judd keeps both under J-1909. It is struck in gold with a lettered edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Adams-Woodin 1741 and Taxay EP1306. Cataloged as PCGS #9132 and NGC #19132.
