Description
The 1914 (D) St. Gaudens Double Eagle represents a Denver Mint issue from the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 453,000, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 22% of production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Produced during the Progressive Era, when President Theodore Roosevelt championed a renaissance in American coin design that produced some of the most beautiful coins ever struck. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $4.9K to $5.0K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge.
