Description
The 1908 St. Gaudens Double Eagle - Motto is a Gold Double Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 156,258 double eagles with the motto dated 1908. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her, and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Coins exist both "No Motto" and "With Motto" (IN GOD WE TRUST), creating a major type distinction after Congress mandated the motto's restoration. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.44 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9147.
