WRPM-001 Repunched Mint Mark

Description

Repunched mintmarks on United States gold coins represent some of the scarcest and most valuable die varieties in all of numismatics, and this 1911-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle cataloged as WRPM-001 is a prime example. The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle (1907-1933), widely regarded as the most beautiful coin ever produced by the U.S. Mint, carries a face value of twenty dollars and contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold. The 1911-D issue had a mintage of only 846,500 pieces, modest by Double Eagle standards. This variety displays a repunched D mintmark — evidence that the small letter punch was impressed into the working die more than once in slightly different positions, leaving traces of the initial impression visible alongside the final placement. Attributed by John A. Wexler and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM-1 and Cherrypickers FS-G20-1911D-501, this variety carries authoritative designations from two major attribution services. Repunched mintmarks on gold coins are exceptionally difficult to locate because the surviving population is small and most examples reside in high-grade collections where variety attribution has not been a priority.
