Description

The 1908 Proof St. Gaudens Double Eagle - Motto Roman is a proof Gold Double Eagle struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her, and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Coins exist both "No Motto" and "With Motto" (IN GOD WE TRUST), creating a major type distinction after Congress mandated the motto's restoration.
