Description

The 1908 (D) St. Gaudens Double Eagle - No Motto is a Gold Double Eagle produced at the Denver Mint as part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 663,750, this is a less common issue — ranked 4th of 5 mint variants by mintage, with 12% of production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Coins exist both "No Motto" and "With Motto" (IN GOD WE TRUST), creating a major type distinction after Congress mandated the motto's restoration. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $4.9K to $5.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9143.
