Description
The 1911 (D) St. Gaudens Double Eagle - D/D is a Gold Double Eagle produced at the Denver Mint as part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. The 1911-D and 1911-S are accessible Denver and San Francisco dates for collectors building date sets. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Auction record: $5,520 MS66 06-21-2024 Stack's Bowers. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.44 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #89158.
