Description
The 1909 St. Gaudens Double Eagle - 9/8 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Double Eagle in the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 161,215, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 5% of production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Produced during the Progressive Era, when President Theodore Roosevelt championed a renaissance in American coin design that produced some of the most beautiful coins ever struck. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $4.9K to $6.5K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge.
