About This Coin
The 1927 St. Gaudens Double Eagle is a United States Gold Double Eagle from the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. The Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints struck 6,233,750 double eagles dated 1927. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her, and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Most of the 1927-D mintage was melted, and none has turned up in the European or South American hoards. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.44 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
