Description
The 1926 (D) St. Gaudens Double Eagle was struck at the Denver Mint as a Gold Double Eagle in the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. The Denver Mint struck 481,000 double eagles dated 1926. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her, and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Minted during and after World War I, as America emerged as a global power and experienced the prosperity of the Roaring Twenties. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.44 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9184.
