Description
The 1911 (S) St. Gaudens Double Eagle is a Gold Double Eagle produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 775,750, this is a less common issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 43% of production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. The 1911-D and 1911-S are accessible Denver and San Francisco dates for collectors building date sets. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins.
