Coin Series
Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854

About This Series

The first gold dollar series, designed by James B. Longacre with a Liberty Head portrait wearing a coronet. These Type 1 gold dollars have a 13mm diameter, making them the smallest U.S. coins ever struck. The 1849-C Open Wreath is a notable Charlotte Mint rarity. Production at Dahlonega (D) and Charlotte (C) makes Southern gold mint issues highly collectible.
