Description
The 1850 (O) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar produced at the New Orleans Mint as part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 14,000, this is a scarce issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 3% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Gold Rush-era production at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The tiny 13mm coins were easily lost. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their historical Southern provenance. Estimated market value ranges from $550 to $7.9K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
