Description
A Gold Dollar from the New Orleans Mint, the 1850 (O) Liberty Gold Dollar belongs to the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 14,000, this is a scarce issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 3% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Gold Rush-era production at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The tiny 13mm coins were easily lost. New Orleans's branch mint, active from 1838 through 1909, produced coins that carry a distinct historical significance tied to the antebellum and postbellum South. Estimated market value ranges from $550 to $7.9K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
