Description

The 1849 Liberty Gold Dollar - No L is a Gold Dollar produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 1,000, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 6 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. First year of the gold dollar. Both Open Wreath and Close Wreath varieties exist at Philadelphia. The 1849-C Open Wreath is a key date from the Charlotte Mint. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $466 to $1.8K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7501.
