About This Coin
The 1854 Liberty Gold Dollar is a United States dollar from the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series — the final year of the series. The Philadelphia, Dahlonega and San Francisco Mints struck 873,069 Type 1 gold dollars dated 1854. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by thirteen stars, and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Last year of the Type 1 design. The Type 2 (Small Indian Princess) replaced it with a larger 15mm diameter to address the tiny coin's impracticality. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 13 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Designed by James Barton Longacre.
