Description

The 1854 Liberty Gold Dollar - Type 1 is a Gold Dollar produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. The U.S. Mint produced 855,502 examples, making this the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 98% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Last year of the Type 1 design. The Type 2 (Small Indian Princess) replaced it with a larger 15mm diameter to address the tiny coin's impracticality. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $466 to $834 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7525.
