Description
The 1854 (S) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 14,632, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 2% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Last year of the Type 1 design. The Type 2 (Small Indian Princess) replaced it with a larger 15mm diameter to address the tiny coin's impracticality. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $725 to $9.4K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7527.
