Description
The 1849 (O) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar produced at the New Orleans Mint as part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 215,000, this is a less common issue — ranked 5th of 6 mint variants by mintage, with 23% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. First year of the gold dollar. Both Open Wreath and Close Wreath varieties exist at Philadelphia. The 1849-C Open Wreath is a key date from the Charlotte Mint. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their historical Southern provenance. Estimated market value ranges from $488 to $4.4K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
