Description
The 1849 Liberty Gold Dollar - Open Wreath, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 collection. The Philadelphia Mint struck 688,567 gold dollars dated 1849 in all; how many have the Open Wreath with the L is not recorded. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by thirteen stars, and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. First year of the gold dollar. Both Open Wreath and Close Wreath varieties exist at Philadelphia. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 13 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7502.
