The 1849 Liberty Gold Dollar - Open Wreath is a Gold Dollar produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. The U.S. Mint produced 687,567 examples, making this the highest mintage among 6 variants, accounting for 72% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. First year of the gold dollar. Both Open Wreath and Close Wreath varieties exist at Philadelphia. The 1849-C Open Wreath is a key date from the Charlotte Mint. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $466 to $1.8K depending on grade and condition.
