Description
The 1850 Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 481,953, this is a less common issue — the highest mintage among 4 variants, accounting for 94% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Gold Rush-era production at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The tiny 13mm coins were easily lost. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $466 to $1.1K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7509.
