Description
The 1851 (D) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar minted at the Dahlonega Mint, within the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 9,882, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Highest mintage year for the Type 1 gold dollar at Philadelphia. Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans also struck coins. Dahlonega's Georgia mint operated from 1838 to 1861, processing Appalachian gold into coins — all Dahlonega issues are collectible rarities. Estimated market value ranges from $2.6K to $19K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7515.
