Description
The 1850 (D) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar produced at the Dahlonega Mint as part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 8,382, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 2% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Gold Rush-era production at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The tiny 13mm coins were easily lost. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $2.6K to $43K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7511.
