Description
The 1850 (D) Liberty Gold Dollar, struck at the Dahlonega Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 collection. The Dahlonega Mint struck 8,382 gold dollars dated 1850. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by thirteen stars, and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Gold dollars were struck at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans. The tiny 13mm coins were easily lost. The Dahlonega Mint in Georgia struck gold coins from 1838 until its closure at the start of the Civil War in 1861. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 13 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7511.
