Description

Part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series, the 1849 (C) Liberty Gold Dollar - Open Wreath is a Gold Dollar from the Charlotte Mint. The 11,634 figure covers every 1849-C gold dollar; how many have the Open Wreath is unknown. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by thirteen stars, and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. First year of the gold dollar. Both Open Wreath and Close Wreath varieties exist at Philadelphia. Charlotte's North Carolina mint operated from 1838 to 1861, striking gold coins from regional deposits. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 13 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
