Description
The 1851 (O) Liberty Gold Dollar represents a New Orleans Mint issue from the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 290,000, this is a less common issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 8% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Highest mintage year for the Type 1 gold dollar at Philadelphia. Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans also struck coins. Coined at the New Orleans Mint, which served the nation's southern economy from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their regional character.
