Description
The 1853 (D) Liberty Gold Dollar represents a Dahlonega Mint issue from the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. The Dahlonega Mint struck 6,583 gold dollars dated 1853. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by thirteen stars, and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Gold dollars were struck at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans. Dahlonega's Georgia mint operated from 1838 to 1861, processing Appalachian gold into coins. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 13 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7523.
