Description
The 1851 Liberty Gold Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Dollar in the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.3 million examples, making this the highest mintage among 4 variants, accounting for 91% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Highest mintage year for the Type 1 gold dollar at Philadelphia. Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans also struck coins. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $466 to $834 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7513.
