Description
The 1851 Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.3 million examples, making this the highest mintage among 4 variants, accounting for 91% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Highest mintage year for the Type 1 gold dollar at Philadelphia. Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans also struck coins. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $466 to $834 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7513.
