About This Coin
Three expositions held between the Chicago fair of 1893 and the Omaha fair of 1898 are filed together here. The California Midwinter Exposition filled the center of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco from February 28 to July 9, 1894; M. H. de Young of the San Francisco Chronicle proposed it after visiting the Columbian Exposition, and many of its aluminum medals were struck in the Mechanics Building on the fairgrounds. The Cotton States and International Exposition ran in Atlanta's Piedmont Park from September 18 to December 31, 1895, and its official medal was designed and struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Tennessee Centennial Exposition marked a hundred years of statehood in Nashville's Centennial Park from May 1 to October 30, 1897, a year later than first planned, and its official medal came from the Mint exhibit set up on the grounds.
