Description
Twenty-two lines of facts about San Francisco cover the reverse of HK-255, set inside a circle with "Souvenir of San Francisco" above and "Metropolis of the Western Coast" below. The medal was a piece of promotion, in keeping with the fair it came from: the Midwinter Exposition of 1894 was meant to bring homeseekers to California and show them what the state and its people could do. The obverse, shared with HK-254, shows the exposition grounds beneath a setting sun with "Midwinter Exposition," the year and "San Francisco, Cal.," and carries the microscopic marks of the Schwaab Stamp & Seal Company of Milwaukee. The piece is aluminum and 45 mm across, the largest size the fair's souvenirs came in. The same facts side was paired with a state seal on HK-257.
