Description
HK-274 is the official medal of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition, struck on the grounds in the Mint's own exhibit. Its lettering is plain: the obverse reads "Tennessee / Centennial / Exposition / Nashville / 1897" in five lines, and the reverse shows a building with "United States Mint" above and "Philadelphia" below. The exposition celebrated a hundred years of statehood and set out to advertise Tennessee's resources, draw business and add to its population. It was meant to open on June 1, 1896, the exact anniversary, but had to be put off, and it ran instead from May 1 to October 30, 1897, on about 180 acres in what is still Centennial Park in Nashville. Agriculture, lumber and mining led the exhibits, and electric lights, still a novelty, were used freely. Brass, 33 mm.
