Description
The bust on the obverse of HK-248 is M. H. de Young, who served the California Midwinter International Exposition as both president and director-general, surrounded by the fair's name and the date 1894. He had dreamed up the exposition while in Chicago as a vice president of the World's Columbian Exposition, and as owner of the San Francisco Chronicle he campaigned for it in print. A good many states and nations then shipped their Chicago displays on to Golden Gate Park. The reverse of the medal shows a modified California state seal with "Souvenir of San Francisco California" and the year around it. HK-248 is white metal, 40 mm; a gilt white metal version is listed as HK-248a.
