Description
Andrew Jackson's bust, facing left inside a closed wreath with his first and last names on either side, fills the obverse of HK-275, with thirteen stars arched above and "Old Hickory" below. The reverse carries the Tennessee state seal in a central circle and names the occasion as the centennial of Tennessee's admission to the Union, "Held at Nashville June 1. 1896." That date is the giveaway: the Tennessee Centennial Exposition was planned to open on June 1, 1896, the exact anniversary of statehood, but was postponed to May 1, 1897, so the medal must have been made early, before the delay. Hibler and Kappen could not find out who issued it. HK-275 is bronze, 35 mm, and the same dies were used for white metal (HK-275a).
